More Than
a Gym.
A Jiu-Jitsu community in the Tweed Valley, dedicated to helping you achieve your goals on and off the mats.
Whether you're here to explore the art of Jiu-Jitsu, sharpen your self-defence skills, or embrace the competitive spirit, you've found a place where your aspirations can take flight.
Our academy traces its lineage back to legendary Master Rickson Gracie and Takamasa Watanabe from Axis Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Tokyo.
Mark and Michelle began their Jiu-Jitsu journey at Axis Jiu-Jitsu on the Gold Coast under Professor Jason Roebig in 2005. Jason's deep understanding of fundamental movement is the cornerstone of everything we teach.
Mark received his black belt from Jason in 2017. In 2024, Mark awarded Michelle her black belt, the result of nearly two decades on the mats together.
Built around our kids.
Michelle has degrees in psychology and social work, and has worked as a social worker with kids and families. She brings that same calm, patient presence to our kids classes.
Mark's degrees are in health science and information technology. One sharpens his understanding of how the body works. The other is still his day job, at a senior level, when he's not on the mats. He's taught Jiu-Jitsu for many years, competed in both, and holds a second-degree black belt in BJJ and a brown belt in Judo. All of it shows up in his classes.
Different strengths. Same gym.
The Flying Squirrel story is below.
As a purple belt competing in the Rickson Gracie Cup in Japan in 2013, Mark faced a high-level Judo competitor who had beaten him previously.
At a critical moment, rather than resort to any correct technique, Mark launched himself onto the opponent in what can only be described as a flying squirrel. It surprised everyone, including the opponent, the referee, the crowd, and Mark himself.
This is not a move that can be taught. It comes from the heart, once every 200 years or so.
Flying Squirrel Jiu-Jitsu was born.
