Kids Martial Arts
in Murwillumbah.
Age-specific Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes that give children room to learn, move and grow. Flying Squirrel Jiu-Jitsu welcomes kids from Murwillumbah and families across the Tweed Valley and Northern Rivers.
Jiu-Jitsu gives kids a challenge they can solve. They learn technique with a training partner, practise staying focused when something is difficult, and discover that progress comes from patience rather than aggression.
Our three kids programs are organised by age, so a four-year-old beginning Little Squirrels has a different class from a young grappler in the Youth Program. Technique, discipline and play are balanced for each stage.
On the mats, the goal is bigger than learning a movement. We want children to build confidence, focus and real friendships while enjoying their training.
Your child's first class is free. Arrive about 10 minutes early to sign in and meet the coach. Comfortable activewear—shorts or leggings and a T-shirt—is enough for a first class, and no gi or previous experience is needed.
Classes include a warm-up, technique and supervised practice, with plenty of games mixed into the kids sessions. Parents are welcome to watch from the side.
Not sure which session fits? Choose your child's age group below, then tell us about them when you book the free trial.

Skills for the Mat.
Skills for Life.
Confidence
Kids have a place to try a technique, make mistakes and try again. Small improvements become evidence that they can learn difficult things.
Focus
Jiu-Jitsu rewards patience and attention. Children practise listening, thinking before they react and working through a problem step by step.
Friendship
Every technique needs a training partner. Kids learn face to face, help each other improve and build friendships around a shared challenge.
Patient Coaching.
Real Experience.
Mark and Michelle Nienaber are both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts who began training at Axis Jiu-Jitsu on the Gold Coast under Professor Jason Roebig in 2005.
Mark holds a second-degree BJJ black belt and a brown belt in Judo. He has taught Jiu-Jitsu for many years and brings a strong understanding of fundamental movement to every class.
Michelle combines nearly two decades on the mats with professional experience supporting kids and families. She has degrees in psychology and social work and has worked as a social worker with children and families.
That experience shows in the calm, patient presence she brings to the kids classes. Read more about the coaches and the academy's Rickson Gracie lineage.
Amazing coaches and classes! Cannot fault the Flying Squirrel team! My daughter absolutely loves attending classes and has really thrived here!

FAQs.
A few useful answers before your child steps onto the mat.
What ages can join the kids classes?
Our kids BJJ program starts at age 4. Little Squirrels is for ages 4–6, Junior Squirrels for ages 7–9, and the Youth Program for ages 10–14.
Is BJJ different from karate or other striking martial arts?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art: children learn movement, balance, safe falling, positions and controlled partner practice rather than punching or kicking. Classes still build the confidence, focus, coordination and self-defence skills families look for in martial arts.
Does my child need martial arts experience or a gi?
No previous experience or gi is needed for the first class. Comfortable activewear such as shorts or leggings and a T-shirt is suitable for the trial.
Can parents watch the class?
Yes. Parents are welcome to watch from the side, and the coaches are available for a chat after class.
How long are the kids classes?
Little Squirrels classes run for 30 minutes, Junior Squirrels for 40 minutes, and the Youth Program for 45 minutes.
Where is Flying Squirrel Jiu-Jitsu?
